About
Edith Jacobson (1897–1978) was a German-American psychoanalyst renowned for her contributions to post-Freudian theory. She trained at the Berlin Psychoanalytical Institute (BPI), becoming a Training Analyst by 1930, and later achieved full membership in the German Psychoanalytical Association. Her early career at Charité’s Department of Psychiatry (led by Karl Bonhoeffer) focused on clinical psychology. Jacobson specialized in child psychoanalysis under Anna Freud and emphasized intellectual independence, resisting Nazi-aligned institutional pressures. She was imprisoned in 1935–1937 for anti-fascist resistance activities, including aiding Jewish patients’ escape. After emigrating to the U.S., she became a leading figure in psychoanalytic theory.
Education:
- Studied medicine at Jena, Munich, and Heidelberg universities (1917–1923), earning a pediatrics doctorate in 1923.
Research Interests: Jacobson’s work bridged clinical practice and political analysis. She explored the intersection of psychoanalysis with Marxism, participating in Wilhelm Reich’s leftist groups and the BPI’s Child Seminar. Her later theories, particularly in ego psychology, remain foundational in post-Freudian thought.
Resistance and Imprisonment: Her involvement with the anti-Nazi group 'Neu Beginnen' led to arrest and a two-year sentence for 'high treason.' Colleagues like Otto Fenichel sought her release, highlighting her controversial yet pivotal role in professional circles.
Legacy: Post-emigration, her U.S. publications became classics in psychoanalytic literature. She maintained a private practice and contributed to academic discourse without formal U.S. institutional affiliation, focusing instead on theoretical advancements.
