Edgard Gnansounou

Edgard Gnansounou is a Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), affiliated with the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering. His academic roles include leading the Research Group in Bioenergy and Energy Planning (BPE) and serving as an Honorary Professor. He holds a Civil Engineering degree (1983) and a PhD in Technical Sciences (1991) from EPFL. His research focuses on energy systems modeling, renewable energy integration, sustainable development, and biofuel strategies. Notable projects include vulnerability analysis of energy supply under extreme weather conditions, lifecycle assessments of biorefineries, and fusion energy system planning.

He has advised numerous PhD students and contributed to over 200 publications in journals like Science of the Total Environment and Environmental Research. Gnansounou chairs the European Biofuels Technology Platform and serves on the editorial board of Bioresource Technology. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to energy policy, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation.

Key achievements include developing metrics for energy vulnerability assessments and advancing methodologies for bioenergy lifecycle analysis. He co-founded ENERS Energy Concept and chairs the SUD Foundation for academic solidarity. His research spans biofuel production optimization, waste valorization, and energy security strategies for regions like West Africa.
