Ed van Niel is a Senior Lecturer at the Division of Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology within the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) at Lund University. He actively contributes to two profile areas: The Energy Transition and Food and Bio.
Research Interests
- Microbial metabolism under anaerobic conditions
- Optimization of fermentation processes for biofuels (hydrogen, ethanol, lactic acid)
- Design of co-cultures and biofilm systems
- Probiotic lactic acid bacteria development
Teaching: 22 years of experience teaching microbiology, metabolic engineering, and environmental biotechnology at all academic levels. Coordinates five graduate/postgraduate courses.
Scientific Collaborations: Partnered with SME BioGaia AB for probiotic research and co-supervised projects with Daniel Topgaard (Physical Chemistry) on yeast stress tolerance and microbial growth constraints (DRAEM project).
UN Sustainable Development Goals: Work aligns with SDGs related to affordable clean energy and environmental protection through biofuel research.
