Ebru Ustundag is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies at Brock University. She holds additional roles as a Core Faculty Member in the MA in Social Justice and Equity Studies, and serves on the Executive Board of the Graphic Medicine International Collective. Her academic leadership extends to editorial and governance roles in organizations such as ACME Journal, Canadian Association of Health Humanities, and the American Association of Geographers’ Mental Health in the Academy Affinity Group.
She earned a PhD in Geography from York University, an MSc in Urban Policy Planning and Local Governments from Middle East Technical University, and a BSc in Political Science and Public Administration. Her research focuses on Urban Geography, Citizenship Studies, and feminist critiques of health and addiction, with notable projects like 'Witnessing Social Citizenship: Microgeographies of Street Level Sex Workers in St. Catharines.'
Dr. Ustundag’s work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing 'Research as Resistance.' Her recent publications explore graphic medicine, urban protests, and qualitative methodologies. She has received prestigious awards, including the OUSA Teaching Excellence Award (2017) and the CTLET Best Practices Award (2010).
In advising, she mentors graduate students researching topics such as mental health in autobiographical graphic novels, deathscapes, and Bangladeshi immigrant experiences. Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on urbanization, gender geography, and critical social justice theories.
