Ebony Russ

Dr. Ebony N. Russ is a Teaching Assistant Professor of Writing at the University Writing Program, Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, George Washington University. She specializes in Anti-Racist Pedagogy and holds a Ph.D. from Howard University. Her research focuses on reducing cardiovascular diseases among marginalized populations, particularly criminal justice-involved individuals, and amplifying health narratives of oppressed communities. She is a scholar-activist and poet committed to empowering future scholar activists through Community Engaged scholarship.

Education: Ph.D. in Medical Sociology from Howard University, with additional master's degrees. She previously served as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Harvard University’s Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, focusing on Anti-Racism in Medicine.

Research interests include linguistic justice, anti-racism, health disparities, college student development, and mass incarceration. Notable initiatives include co-developing GW’s Rethinking DC Youth & Policing program with the Nashman Center and Sociology Department. She has extensive experience in student affairs, including residence life, counseling, and social justice programming.

Affiliations include the Board of Directors of the Academic Consortium on Criminal Justice Health (ACCJH), American Society of Criminology, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Her interdisciplinary collaborations span criminologists, physicians, engineers, and K-12 educators.
