Dr Eamon McCarthy serves as Senior Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Stirling, having joined in 2023 after previous appointments at the University of Glasgow and Queen's University Belfast. He holds significant administrative responsibilities as Programme Director for the MSc Gender and Diplomatic Practice, MLitt Genders and Sexualities, and MSc Genders and Sexualities.
McCarthy's research centers on genders, sexes, and sexualities across the Spanish-speaking world with particular emphasis on Argentina. His interdisciplinary approach bridges visual and literary cultures, focusing on marginalized voices and societal organization. He has published extensively on the Borges siblings, including a monograph dedicated to Norah Borges, and currently pursues research on women artists in the Spanish-speaking world and queer Argentine fiction.
As an academic leader, McCarthy serves as Assistant Editor for both the Bulletin of Spanish Studies and the Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies, and holds the position of Secretary for the Society for Latin American Studies (2024). His work contributes significantly to the Gender Studies Research Group at Stirling, operating within the broader research theme of Cultures, Communities & Society.
McCarthy actively supervises graduate students in Gender & Sexuality Studies, Visual Cultures (particularly women painters & Latin American cinema), 20th-21st century Latin American literature & culture, and the historical avant-garde across Spain and Latin America.
