Dr. Elsa Gonzalez serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Administration & Human Resource Development at Texas A&M University’s College of Education & Human Development. She concurrently holds the roles of Assistant Provost for Strategic Educational Partnerships and Director of HSI Initiatives. Her academic leadership extends to serving as Regional Editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education and Board Member for the Journal of Hispanic in Higher Education. She also acts as an Intermittent Expert at the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Dr. Gonzalez holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Human Resource Development from Texas A&M University (2004) and an MBA from the National University of Mexico (UNAM, 1998). Her research focuses on underrepresented STEM students, resilience strategies, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and cross-language qualitative methodologies. She has authored over 100 publications and a seminal book An Asset-Based Approach to Advancing Latina Students in STEM, which won the 2022 AAHHE Book of the Year Award.
Her work has been nationally recognized through awards including the 2023 NSF Director’s Award for Superior Accomplishment and inclusion in Diverse Issues in Higher Education’s 2023 list of 25 Most Outstanding Women in Academia. Key projects include her NSF CAREER grant examining Latina STEM resilience in HSIs and collaborative studies on Latinx medical student resilience and pandemic impacts on engineering education.
Dr. Gonzalez has advised six doctoral students and leads initiatives advancing HSI institutional effectiveness. Her research bridges theory and practice, emphasizing culturally responsive strategies to broaden STEM participation and institutional equity.
