E. Aubrey Thompson

E. Aubrey Thompson, Ph.D., is a Professor of Cancer Biology at Mayo Clinic, specializing in cancer biology and spatial biology technologies. He leads the Hormones and Cancer Laboratory, focusing on breast cancer research, immunobiology, and translational genomics. His roles include Director of the Spatial Biology Core (2024–present) and co-leader of the Genome Analysis Shared Resource at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Thompson holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco.

His research emphasizes understanding tumor-immune interactions, particularly in high-risk breast cancers such as HER2-positive and triple-negative subtypes. Key projects include developing spatial biology tools to map single-cell RNA and protein profiles within tumors, identifying therapeutic targets, and predicting treatment responses. Collaborative work spans benign breast disease progression and genomic analyses of cancer heterogeneity.

Dr. Thompson’s lab has contributed to international initiatives like The Cancer Genome Atlas Program and the FDA’s SEQC project.
