About
Dr. Dwight Burford serves as a Research Professor at the University of North Texas within the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes Institute (AMMPI) and the Center for Friction Stir Processings (CFSP). He joined UNT in September 2019 after a distinguished career spanning industry (Boeing) and academia (Wichita State University), where he directed major research laboratories and pioneered aerospace manufacturing innovations.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from the Colorado School of Mines (1987) and postdoctoral studies at Ohio State University. This foundation enabled his transition to Boeing as an Associate Technical Fellow, where his friction stir welding research culminated in flight hardware for 747-400F aircraft by mid-2005.
Dr. Burford's research focuses on friction stir welding and processing, with recent breakthroughs in Submerged Bobbin Tool (SBT) tunneling technology for creating internal pathways in aerospace structures. His expertise spans metallurgical engineering, metal forming, and solid-state fabrication methods, enabling applications in heat exchangers, cooling plates, and complex structural components where internal channels for wiring, fluids, or gases are required.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2023-2009) reveals consistent innovation in robotic SBT implementation for 3D curvilinear channels, non-destructive evaluation techniques for weld defect detection, and fatigue life optimization in aerospace joints. His work bridges fundamental metallurgy with industrial applications, particularly in aluminum alloy processing for aircraft manufacturing.
Dr. Burford has directed significant research infrastructure including the NIAR Advanced Joining Lab at Wichita State University and the WSU Site of the NSF-funded Center for Friction Stir Processing (CFSP). His current work at UNT continues to advance manufacturing technologies through AMMPI and CFSP, with pending patents for SBT tunneling technology indicating ongoing commercialization efforts in aerospace manufacturing.
