Douglas R Nickel

Douglas R. Nickel is the Andrea V. Rosenthal Professor of History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, specializing in the history of photography and American art. His academic career includes roles as curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1995-2005) and director of the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (1995), an MFA (1989), and a BA from Cornell University (1983).

Research focuses on photographs' ontological status, viewer interpretation, and intersections between photography and scientific/metaphysical discourses.
