Douglas LaRowe is an Associate Professor and the Claude C. Albritton Jr. Chair in Earth Sciences at Southern Methodist University (SMU). His research focuses on quantifying life's energy and time constraints on Earth and extraterrestrial environments, integrating computational modeling, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and molecular biology. He holds a B.A. in Earth & Planetary Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Research interests include geochemistry, astrobiology, environmental microbiology, organic matter dynamics, bioenergetics, thermodynamics, carbon cycling, and hydrothermal systems. His lab at SMU's Heroy Hall specializes in analyzing sample compositions, including DNA/RNA extraction and organic compound identification, leveraging SMU's Stable Isotope Lab and Materials Characterization Lab.
