Douglas Hartmann is Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, specializing in race, sport, and social movements. He received the 2022-23 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Graduate and Professional Education for his mentorship of 19 PhD students and leadership in diversity initiatives like The Public Life Project. His research examines athlete activism, racial dynamics in sports, and multiculturalism.
Hartmann co-edits the “Critical Issues in Sport and Society” series and publishes The Society Pages. His books include Midnight Basketball: Race, Sport, and Neoliberal Social Policy and Race, Culture, and the Revolt of the Black Athlete. Current work focuses on athlete protests and Black Lives Matter.
