Douglas Bristol is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Southern Mississippi. Specializing in African American history, business history, and U.S. race relations, his research explores intersections of labor, military service, and social justice. He holds a PhD in African American History from the University of Maryland-University College (2002), preceded by MA (1993) and BA (1988) degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
His scholarship includes Knights of the Razor (2015), examining black barbers' roles in American society, and co-editing Integrating the U.S. Military (2017). Current research focuses on black GIs' post-WWII experiences in Khaki Globe Trotters. His work has been featured on The Art of Manliness podcast and PBS' Boss documentary.
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses including Mississippi History, Economic History of the U.S., and African American History seminars. Courses emphasize critical analysis of social structures and institutional change.
