Douglas A Jones Jr. is an Associate Professor of Theater Studies and English at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, holding dual appointments since 2022. His research focuses on African American literatures of the 18th and 19th centuries, performance studies, and political theory. He earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2011.
His work explores the intersection of political character, aesthetic experience, and cultural narratives. Recent publications include analyses of Richard Wright's The Man Who Lived Underground and Paul Laurence Dunbar's legacy. Jones has received prestigious awards such as the Oscar G. Brockett Essay Prize and the Errol Hill Award.
Teaching interests span African American theater, performance studies, and modern drama. He has instructed courses like 'African American Theater and Performance' and 'Introduction to Performance Studies.' Former roles include Associate Professor of African & African American Studies (2022–2025) and Scholar-in-Residence in Theater Studies (2021).
