About
Doug Massey is Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University's Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, where he holds a joint appointment. A leading scholar in social stratification, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Philosophical Society, and currently serves as president of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.
Massey's research examines international migration patterns, racial segregation, urban poverty, and inequality dynamics, with special focus on Latin America. His influential publications analyze migration mechanisms, segregation's societal impacts, and policy failures. Key works include American Apartheid: Segregation and the Making of the Underclass (1993), which established foundational theories on racial housing segregation, and Brokered Boundaries: Constructing Immigrant Identity in Anti-Immigrant Times (2010), exploring identity formation amid hostile policy environments.
Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate expanded research into pandemic migration impacts, diverse social networks' benefits, racial disparities in housing, Central American development, and new Black elite formation. These works reflect sustained focus on migration systems, inequality mechanisms, and policy analysis across global contexts.
