Doug Barrett is Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he researches visual culture, community-centered design, and place-based aesthetics. His work examines roadside ephemera and vernacular signage to explore how meaning is constructed through material culture. Barrett founded BLOOM Studio, a student-run initiative that partners with non-profits to address community needs through design interventions.
Barrett's research investigates graphic design's role in social stewardship, particularly through projects documenting local visual culture and deploying design solutions for underserved communities. His Cahaba River National Blueway project received the Sappi Ideas That Matter grant for its environmental focus.
