About
Dong Sun, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Physiology at New York Medical College's School of Medicine. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of vascular regulation with particular emphasis on the NO/sGC pathway and its role in vascular function under both physiological and pathological conditions.
Dr. Sun's research interests center on microvascular function regulation via the NO/sGC pathway, which serves as a key player in vascular regulation and is specifically targeted by oxidative species such as superoxide, peroxynitrite, and hydrogen peroxide. His work investigates how pathological conditions including vascular aging, metabolic syndrome, heart failure, and pulmonary/systemic hypertension involve reduced eNOS activation and enhanced oxidative stress that contribute to altered vascular NO/sGC signaling. His laboratory employs sophisticated techniques including perfusion systems for vessel chambers, vessel culture perfusion systems, and HPLC-fluorescence detector-based measurements to study endothelial function and vascular responses.
The publication trends in Dr. Sun's work show a consistent focus on vascular biology with particular emphasis on endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress mechanisms, and novel therapeutic approaches for vascular pathologies. His recent publications (2023-2024) increasingly focus on glycocalyx restoration using liposomal nanocarriers as a potential treatment for sepsis and endotoxemia, representing a translational extension of his fundamental research on vascular mechanisms.
Dr. Sun has developed several innovative methodologies in his laboratory, including a perfusion system with serially connected vessel chambers for EDHF bioassay and electrophysiology studies, a vessel culture system with ten separated chambers for comparative functional evaluation, techniques for obtaining endothelial lysates from single vessels, and specialized HPLC-based measurements of vascular compounds including EETs, superoxide, homocysteine, angiotensins, and protoporphyrins.
