Donald L. Russell is a Professor and Associate Dean (Governance) in the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University, holding a position within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Dr. Russell holds a B.Eng. from T.U.N.S., and S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
His research focuses on advanced prosthetic limb design, biomechanics of musculoskeletal injuries in skilled musicians, cardiovascular system dynamics, and patient simulator development. Specific applications include improving prosthetic limb functionality, characterizing abdominal palpation, and understanding piano-playing-related injuries through biomechanical analysis.
He currently serves as President of the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society and has contributed to peer-reviewed literature, including work on multi-joint stiffness modeling for prosthetics. His interdisciplinary work bridges mechanical engineering with biomedical applications.
