Donald F. Towsley is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, part of the College of Information & Computer Sciences. He holds a BA in Physics (1971) and PhD in Computer Science (1975), both from the University of Texas. He joined UMass in 1976 in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering before moving to his current college in 1986. His research focuses on networks, performance analysis, wireless security, and network science, with pioneering contributions to network tomography and fluid models for large networks.
Professional Activities: He has held visiting roles at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, INRIA, AT&T Labs, Microsoft Research Cambridge, and the University of Paris 6. He served as editor for journals like IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and ACM Transactions on Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Computing Systems (TOMPECS). He co-chaired major conferences including ACM SIGMETRICS/Performance '92, Performance'02, and IEEE INFOCOM 2009.
Awards & Recognition: Recipient of the IEEE Koji Kobayashi Award (2007), ACM SIGMETRICS Achievement Award (2007), ACM SIGCOMM Award (2008), and multiple test-of-time and best paper awards. Honored as a Fellow of IEEE and ACM, and a corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
Grants & Mentorship: Advised numerous students (list unavailable) and secured grants supporting foundational network research. Active in IFIP Working Groups 6.3 and 7.3, and co-founder of the Computer Performance Foundation.
