Dominika Motak

Dr hab. Dominika Motak, prof. UJ, is the Head of the Department of Sociology of Religion at Jagiellonian University's Institute of Religious Studies, part of the Faculty of Philosophy. Her work focuses on the interplay between modernity and religion, contemporary religious transformations, and Georg Simmel's sociological theories. She has led major research projects including 'Capitalism as Religion' (2017-2018) and 'The Biology of Spirituality' (2002-2003), funded through international collaborations.

Her research examines religious fundamentalism, New Age spirituality, ritual studies, and science-religion interfaces. Notable publications include monographs on Simmel's religious thought and edited volumes on ritual theory. She teaches courses like 'Sociology of Religion' and 'Religion and Modernity', and has contributed to interdisciplinary debates through academic journals and international conferences.

Motak's work bridges classical sociological theory with contemporary phenomena, addressing topics like migration discourse, abortion ethics, and urban religious practices. She has held visiting fellowships at the University of Vienna and collaborated with institutions like the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences (Berkeley).
