Dmitri Kharzeev is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University (since 2018) and has served as Director of the Center for Nuclear Theory (2020–present). He holds concurrent positions as Senior Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory (since 2004) and Head of the RIKEN-BNL Theory group (since 2015). Previously, he was Professor at Stony Brook (2010–2018) and led Brookhaven's Nuclear Theory group (2004–2010). His career spans institutions including CERN, INFN, and universities in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and the Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies.
Education:
- MSc in Quantum Statistics and Field Theory, Lomonosov Moscow State University (1986)
- PhD in Theoretical Particle and Nuclear Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University (1990)
Prof. Kharzeev's research focuses on high-energy physics, quantum field theory, and heavy ion collisions, bridging theoretical nuclear physics and quantum information. His work explores fundamental interactions in extreme conditions, such as those created in particle accelerators, and implications for quantum materials.
Scientific Awards & Honors:
- Humboldt Research Award (2013)
- Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) (2010)
- Fellow, American Physical Society (2006)
- Emilio Segre Distinguished Scholar (2005)
- RIKEN-BNL Fellow (1997)
- Winner of USSR Competition in Physics for students (1986)
His leadership roles include directing the Center for Quantum Materials (2013–2020) at Stony Brook and organizing programs at institutions like CERN, Kavli Foundation, and Institute for Nuclear Theory. He maintains active collaborations across international research centers.
