Dirk Scheele

Dirk Scheele is a Professor in the Department of Social Neuroscience at the Faculty of Medicine, Ruhr University Bochum, and part of the Research Center One Health Ruhr of the University Alliance Ruhr. His research investigates the neurobiological foundations of social attachment, examining how social isolation affects sensory processing and trauma responses.

• Uses multimodal techniques: fMRI (1.5-7T), fNIRS, tDCS, and psychophysiological measurements (EDA, ECG)
• Focuses on cross-modal social perception (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory)
• Collaborates with institutions like University of Bonn and University of Haifa

Recent work explores hormonal modulation of memory systems, develops interventions for chronic loneliness, and maps neural dissociations between social anxiety and loneliness. His studies appear in top-tier journals including American Journal of Psychiatry and PNAS.
