About
Dimitrios Gournis is a Professor of Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology at the Technical University of Crete (TUC), affiliated with the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Materials Science, Nanotechnology and Biotechnological Applications. He directs the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Processes (PCCP Lab) and supervises doctoral candidates. His education includes a Ph.D. from the National Technical University of Athens (1998) and a Chemistry degree from the University of Ioannina (1992).
Research interests span nanomaterials synthesis, 2D materials (graphene, clays, TMDs), carbon nanostructures, hybrid nanocomposites, and applications in catalysis, energy, environmental remediation, biomedicine, and electronics. Characterization techniques include XRD, FTIR, Raman, and electron microscopy.
Recent publications (2023-2025) focus on sustainable nanomaterials, energy storage, CO₂ methanation catalysts, nanomedicine (drug delivery), e-waste recycling, and cultural heritage materials. Trends show strong emphasis on green synthesis, environmental applications, and nanoscale biomedical solutions.
Gournis leads major grants including:
- Flagship GREENMAT (€600K, 2023-2025): Nanomaterials for energy/environment
- HFRI StableCO2Nanocat (€180K, 2023-2026): CO₂ recycling catalysts
- PhotoUpPlas (€115K, 2023-2026): Plastic waste upcycling
- Graphene glucose monitors (€150K, 2020-2023)
- Biogas-to-hydrogen systems (€102K, 2020-2023)
He holds editorial roles at Frontiers in Materials, Molecules, and Nanomaterials, and directs MSc programs in Materials Science at the University of Ioannina.
