About
Dr Dimitrios Cakouros is a Lecturer at the School of Biomedicine, University of Adelaide, located at SAHMRI North Terrace. His research focuses on stem cell aging mechanisms, particularly in bone degeneration and osteoporosis. He investigates how epigenetic changes driven by diet/lifestyle impact stem cell功能 and lifespan using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Current projects explore epigenetic regulators in MSC aging, metabolic interventions for rejuvenation, and cardiac/neural stem cell aging mechanisms.
Research techniques include RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and in vivo skeletal analysis across mouse models. He supervises Honours and postgraduate students, aiming to identify novel epigenetic enzymes and develop therapeutic strategies to reverse stem cell aging. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications in regenerative medicine.
Dr Cakouros is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD candidates in areas related to epigenetics, stem cell biology, and aging-related diseases. His research group collaborates on projects involving conditional gene knockout models and pharmacological interventions targeting epigenetic pathways.
