About
Dimitra P. Vageli is a Research Scientist in the Department of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine, Yale University. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation and neoplasia, particularly in head and neck cancers. She earned her PhD in Molecular Oncology and Biotechnology from the University of Crete (1998) and has contributed extensively to understanding the role of bile reflux, tobacco smoke, and miRNAs in carcinogenesis.
Her academic affiliations include the Cancer Signaling Networks Center and Larynx Lab at Yale. Vageli has received the Ohse Research Award (2013–2015) and Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Award (2025). Her work spans translational research, biomarker discovery, and molecular pathology.
Key research areas include:
- Bile reflux-induced oncogenesis and NF-κB signaling
- Role of miRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers
- Ion channel dysfunction in neurological disorders
Recent studies highlight her work on saliva/serum miRNA panels for oral cancer detection and the preventive role of curcumin in bile-related carcinogenesis.
Awards:
- Ohse Research Award (Yale SOM, 2014–2015)
- Springer Nature Editor of Distinction (2025)
- Author Service Award (2025)
Labs/Teams: Larynx Lab, Cancer Signaling Networks, Neuroscience and Regeneration Research Center.
