Diemo Daum

Prof. Dr. Diemo Daum is a Professor of Plant Nutrition in Horticulture at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. He leads research on sustainable substrate development, plant nutrition, and food quality enhancement. His work focuses on reducing environmental impacts in agriculture through innovation in substrate alternatives (e.g., peat-free materials) and improving crop nutritional profiles via biofortification. He has held academic leadership roles, including coordinating bachelor’s and master’s programs in applied plant biology and agricultural engineering. His research projects include ENROK (Holistic Substrate Alternatives), NaKuHo (Wood Fiber Utilization), and EiBiG (Iron Biofortification).

Education: He earned his PhD in Plant Ecology from the University of Hannover (1996). Prior to academia, he worked in agricultural supply chain management at Nestlé (1996–2007).

Research Interests: Sustainable horticultural practices, nutrient management, biofortification of crops, and environmental impact mitigation in agriculture. His projects address climate-smart agriculture, reducing nitrogen emissions, and developing resource-efficient substrates.

Key Projects: ENROK explores sustainable wood-based substrates; BroHoKo+ targets broccoli hollow stem reduction; EiBiG enhances iron bioavailability in vegetables. Collaborations include industry partners like Mählmann Gemüsebau GmbH and academic institutions such as TU Berlin.
