Detlef Hommel is a Professor at the University of Wrocław, Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, and Director of the Nanotechnology Department at the Wroclaw Research Centre EIT+, Poland. His academic career includes roles as Professor at the University of Bremen (1994–2014), Scientific Coordinator of the NANOMAT programme (2010–2014), and Distinguished Guest at the University of California Santa Barbara (1998). He holds an Alexander von Humboldt Honorary Research Fellowship (2006–2009).
His research focuses on condensed matter physics, optoelectronics, semiconductor epitaxy, and quantum dot-based systems. Key areas include low-dimensional structures, single photon sources, and short wavelength laser diodes. He has organized major international conferences and serves on numerous advisory committees.
