Des Freedman is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he previously served as Head of Department. His research examines media power relationships, policy processes, and reform movements, with particular focus on public service broadcasting and digital platform regulation.
Founded and chaired the Media Reform Coalition, leading the 2016 Independent Inquiry into the Future of Public Service Broadcasting. Authored influential works including 'The Contradictions of Media Power' and 'The Media Manifesto' analyzing concentration of media ownership and democratic communication.
Current research investigates media coverage of austerity politics, algorithmic accountability, and activist responses to platform power. Teaches advanced courses in media theory and doctoral research methods.
