About
Dr. Derrick Vaughn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Utah State University. His research focuses on carbon cycling across Earth's major reservoirs (soils, oceans, rivers, atmosphere), with an emphasis on Coastal Blue Carbon ecosystems, anthropogenic impacts on carbon dynamics, and greenhouse gas emissions from wetlands and estuaries.
Research Interests:
- Biogeochemical processes governing carbon burial and export
- Stable isotope analysis (¹³C, ¹⁵N) and geochronological techniques (²¹⁰Pb, ¹³⁷Cs, ¹⁴C)
- Measurement of dissolved organic/inorganic carbon (DOC/DIC) and molecular biomarkers
Labs/Teams: The Vaughn Biogeochemistry Lab specializes in advanced analytical methods including ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). The lab is developing capabilities for radiocarbon sample preparation andDOM quality analysis.
