Dennis Murphy

Dennis Murphy serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health while simultaneously holding the position of President and Chief Executive Officer for Indiana University Health (IU Health). He joined IU Health in 2013 as Chief Operating Officer before advancing to his current executive leadership role.

Murphy brings extensive healthcare administration expertise to his academic position, having previously served as COO and Executive Vice President at Northwestern Memorial HealthCare in Chicago, and as Vice President of Ambulatory Services and Financial Planning for University of Chicago Hospitals. His career foundation includes a decade at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where he progressed from administrative fellow to administrator of the Department of Medicine.

His research interests center on healthcare administration, health policy, public health management, and hospital leadership, drawing directly from his extensive executive experience managing complex healthcare systems. These interests align with his practical experience navigating the challenges of modern healthcare delivery and administration.

Murphy earned a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, providing the academic foundation for his distinguished career bridging healthcare practice and academic instruction.

As an adjunct faculty member, Murphy contributes to developing future healthcare leaders by sharing his executive experience with students at the Fairbanks School of Public Health, creating valuable connections between academic theory and real-world healthcare leadership challenges.
