National University of SingaporeAbout
Denis Bandurin is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), holding the Presidential Young Professorship. He leads the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics Lab exploring novel low-dimensional quantum materials under terahertz and infrared excitation. Previously, he was a Pappalardo Fellow at MIT (2018) and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Manchester (2017). His doctoral work at the University of Manchester (2017) under Professors Andre Geim and Irina Grigorieva focused on graphene’s electronic properties. His research has demonstrated hydrodynamic electron transport, viscous Hall effects, and THz sensing principles in 2D materials. Bandurin’s group develops high-temperature superconducting single-photon detectors and studies electron viscosity in graphene.
Education: Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, University of Manchester (2017). Postdoctoral training included MIT (2018) under Prof. Pablo Jarillo-Herrero and Manchester (2017).
Research interests span quantum materials, hydrodynamic electron fluids, terahertz optoelectronics, and superconductivity. Notable contributions include Fizeau drag in graphene plasmonics and THz bolometric detection. His work bridges fundamental physics with device applications, such as tunable terahertz detectors and photonic nanoantennas.
- Awards: MIT Technology Review Innovator Under 35 (2023), CDE Young Researcher Award (2025), IRMMW-THz Society Young Scientist Award (2024), Singapore NRF Fellowship (2025).
- Teaching: Courses ML4222 (Electron Transport), MLE6103 (Materials Structure), and doctoral seminars.
- Advising: Advises Ph.D. students such as Andrei, Xiangyu, Misha, and Artur. Open to new students for 2026 admissions.
- Labs/Teams: Experimental Condensed Matter Physics Lab at NUS, collaborating with Prof. Dmitri Basov’s group on nonequilibrium electrodynamics.
