Deepak Kapur

Deepak Kapur is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of New Mexico's School of Engineering. He holds concurrent appointments as Visiting Professor at the Institute of Software Science (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and IIT Delhi, and Adjunct Professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Previously, he served as Department Chair at UNM (1999-2006), Professor at University at Albany (1988-1998), and Research Staff at General Electric (1980-1987).

He earned his PhD from MIT (1980), and M.Tech/B.Tech from IIT Kanpur (1971, 1973). His editorial roles include former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Automated Reasoning and board memberships for multiple journals including Journal of Symbolic Computation and Theory and Practice of Logic Programming.

Research spans:

• Core CS: Automated reasoning, term rewriting systems, formal verification methods
• Theory: Algebraic/geometric reasoning, constraint solving, elimination techniques
• Applied: Program analysis, distributed systems, social computing

His publications demonstrate strong focus on symbolic computation (Groebner bases, polynomial systems), program verification (invariant generation, termination analysis), and interdisciplinary work in computing education. Recent articles show increased attention to social aspects of technology.

Supervised 9 PhD students now holding academic/industry positions globally. Founded the Institute for Programming and Logics at Albany. Research collaborations span institutions in China, India, and Europe.
