Dr. Deborah Augsburger is a Professor in the Social Inquiry Department at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She holds a B.A. in History from Earlham College and a Ph.D. in Anthropology (Linguistic/Cultural) from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on language preservation in indigenous communities, particularly Isthmus Zapotec communities in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the intersection of identity, cultural politics, and cross-cultural communication. She actively engages students in hands-on community research, such as studies on food deserts and access to healthy food in Superior.
Dr. Augsburger has received numerous academic and teaching awards, including the UW-Superior Wisconsin Teaching Fellow (2009), Garcia Robles-Fulbright award (1995), and Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship (1999). Her work has been supported by grants from institutions like the Temple Research Incentive Fund and the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
