Dean Smart

Dr Dean Smart serves as a Senior Lecturer in History and Citizenship Education within the ACE - Education and Childhood department at the University of the West of England, Bristol. His professional engagements span national and European educational initiatives through extensive collaborations with the Council of Europe and EUROCLIO (European Association of History Educators) for teacher training, resource development, and consultancy with museums and national bodies.

Dr Smart's research advances active, inclusive education models promoting Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE). He investigates History and Civics Education across the UK and Europe, specializing in Difficult Sensitive and Controversial Issues pedagogy, textbook development, secondary education systems, assessment methodologies, school governance, and teacher professional development.

As an educator, he contributes to MA and Doctoral programmes, PGCE Secondary History teacher training, and pedagogy/didactics instruction. His international consultancy extends to 'blue chip' companies and European-wide projects enhancing historical and civic education through active learning frameworks.
