Davide Schmid is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Manchester Metropolitan University. He holds a Ph.D. in Politics and International Relations from the University of Sheffield (2018), an MA in International Relations from the University of York, and a BA in International Sciences from Università Statale di Milano.
His research bridges Critical Theory, International Political Economy, and European studies, with three primary foci:
- Reassessing Frankfurt School critical theory in International Relations
- Political economy of European integration post-Brexit
- European border regimes through racial capitalism frameworks
Publications critically examine cosmopolitan theories in IR, EU strategic autonomy agendas, and humanitarianism's role in migration management. His book 'The Poverty of Critical Theory in International Relations' (Palgrave, 2023) analyzes crisis points in contemporary critical approaches.
He co-convenes the Critical Theory in Hard Times research network and serves as Deputy Director of the Manchester Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on Global Emancipatory Movements and Postcolonial Perspectives, plus postgraduate modules on History of International Relations and Contemporary Global Politics.
