Dr. David Yan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aviation and Technology at San José State University, part of the College of Engineering. He holds a B.E. (Hons) and M.Phil. from Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand) and a Ph.D. from Deakin University (Australia). His research focuses on advanced manufacturing processes, including Friction Stir Welding, Additive Manufacturing, and High-speed Machining of aerospace alloys and bulk metallic glasses.
Education: B.E. Mechanical Engineering (2007, AUT NZ), M.Phil. (2009, AUT NZ), Ph.D. (2014, Deakin AU). He teaches courses such as Green and Sustainable Product Design, Senior Project, and Engineering Materials. His research aims to improve hybrid manufacturing efficiency and material properties in aerospace applications.
Professional Service: Active in The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), serving as Technical Committee Member, Symposium Co-Organizer, and Guest Editor for JOM. He chairs committees in curriculum development, research, and scholarship at SJSU.
Research Contributions: Over 20 peer-reviewed publications and edited books on FSW, additive manufacturing, and BMG processing. His work emphasizes surface integrity, microstructural evolution, and process optimization in advanced materials.
