David Vance is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He is an accomplished poet and educator, recognized with the UT System Regent’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and membership in UTSA’s Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars.
Dr. Vance holds the following degrees:
- M.A. in English with Specialization in Creative Writing, University of Illinois at Chicago
- Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing (with a Women’s Studies Certificate), University of Houston
His research interests include creative writing, modern and contemporary American poetry, nineteenth-century British and American literature, science and literature, and hybrid/mixed-media poetics. His work consistently explores innovative documentary forms and interdisciplinary approaches to poetic expression.
Dr. Vance's publications feature two prize-winning poetry collections—Vitreous (2007, Del Sol Press Prize) and Stupor (2014, Elixir Press Antivenom Prize)—alongside the critical essay "Mark Nowak: Documentary Praxis [Redux]" (2013). Collectively, his work demonstrates a sustained engagement with experimental structures, social consciousness, and the intersection of scientific inquiry with poetic form.
Dr. Vance has received numerous honors, including:

- Member of UTSA’s Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars
- 2005 Del Sol Press Prize for Vitreous
- 2012 Elixir Press Antivenom Prize for Stupor
Dr. Vance serves as co-editor for American Letters & Commentary, dedicated to innovative writing and art, and as faculty adviser for Sagebrush Review, UTSA's student-run literary annual, where he mentors emerging writers through editorial guidance and curriculum development.
