David Thyrén is a Senior Lecturer in Music and Society at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH), affiliated with the Department of Music, Education & Society. His interdisciplinary research focuses on music history, pedagogy, production, and social sustainability in higher music education, with additional interests in ethics, aesthetics, music medicine, and health. He holds a PhD and Master's in Musicology from Stockholm University, with a doctoral thesis examining the Swedish progressive music movement, particularly the music halls Uppsala Musikforum and Sprängkullen in Gothenburg.
Thyrén teaches and supervises students at KMH and other universities. He previously served as a Senior Lecturer in Musicology at Stockholm University. Currently, he is Vice-Chair of KMH's Teacher Nomination Committee, a member of the Sustainability Council, and KMH's coordinator for the Nordic Network for Music Education. He also engages with international research networks like MIRAC and the Swedish Society for Music Research.
His research projects include 'Knowledge Concerts,' 'Music as Consolation,' 'Pre-School Children and Live Classical Music,' and 'Searching for Sophia in Music Production.' He contributed to the Erasmus+ project ARTHEWE, exploring historical perspectives on ethics and aesthetics in music medicine and health. Thyrén actively coordinates interdisciplinary initiatives linking musicology, artistic practice, and education.
