David Stymeist is a Professor at Carleton University's Department of English, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. from Queen’s University. His teaching focuses on creative writing, crime fiction, and Renaissance literature. His research interests include 16th- and 17th-century literature, poetry, and crime writing. Alongside his academic work, he actively contributes to literary communities, formerly serving as president of VERSe Ottawa, organizing VERSeFest and managing Ottawa’s Poet Laureate program.
Stymeist’s creative publications include The Bone Weir (2016) and Cluster Flux (2023), both poetry collections. His academic publications explore topics such as early modern crime pamphlets, Shakespearean drama, and gender studies. He has received the Carleton Teaching Award (2011) and a Research Achievement Award (2008), alongside poetry awards like the Canadian Author’s Association Award shortlist (2016).
His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating digital archives into pedagogy and analyzing cultural anxieties in early modern texts. Stymeist’s creative work often reflects his formative experiences on O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, shaping his cultural perspectives. He balances academic rigor with community engagement, advocating for literary arts through organizational leadership and public events.
