David Shatz is the Ronald P. Stanton University Professor of Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious Thought at Yeshiva University. He chairs the Department of Philosophy at Stern College for Women and serves as editor of The Torah u-Madda Journal and the MeOtzar HoRav series. His research bridges general philosophy (knowledge theory, free will, ethics, religion) and Jewish thought (Jewish ethics, Maimonides, science-Judaism interfaces, 20th-century rabbinic figures).
Educated at Yeshiva College (valedictorian), RIETS (ordination), and Columbia University (PhD in Philosophy), he has authored/co-authored 16 books and over 100 articles. Honors include YU’s Presidential Medallion (first faculty recipient) and Templeton Foundation grants for interdisciplinary projects on virtue and science-religion dialogues.
Teaching focuses on Jewish ethics, medieval philosophy, and modern rabbinic thought. Collaborates internationally on virtue ethics through the University of Chicago’s Templeton-funded initiative. Editorial roles include Tradition journal and Maimonides manuscripts projects.
