David Schuman is a Teaching Professor in English and Director of the Creative Writing program at Washington University in St. Louis. He coordinates the creative writing concentration for undergraduate English majors and directs the nationally ranked MFA program. His research focuses on fiction and non-fiction writing techniques, particularly microfiction and short-short stories.
Schuman's creative work explores themes of place, identity, and narrative subversion, often through experimental structures. His prose chapbook Best Men examines unconventional wedding scenarios through multiple genres including realism and fabulism.
Awarded the Pushcart Prize and MacDowell Fellowship, his stories have appeared in Conjunctions, Missouri Review, and Catapult. He teaches specialized courses including 'The Short-Short', 'Sudden Fiction', and 'Stories in the Suburbs'.
