David Schultz

Dr. David Schultz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at UMBC. He serves as Director of the UMBC Home Visiting Training Certificate Program and Graduate Program Director for Applied Developmental Psychology. His research focuses on social-emotional development in infancy/early childhood and evaluation of home visiting programs. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware (2000).

Education: Ph.D. in Psychology from University of Delaware (2000). Leadership roles include Graduate Program Director for Applied Developmental Psychology and Director of the Home Visiting Training Program. His work emphasizes prevention programs supporting caregiver-infant interactions and training early childhood professionals.

Research spans social information processing in children, emotion competence, and program evaluation methodologies. Key contributions include developing the START academic readiness program and evaluating statewide home visiting training systems. He has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications since 1984 across developmental psychology, public health, and medical diagnosis domains.

Laboratory: Directs the Social Development Lab. Current projects involve interprofessional training for substance-exposed newborn care and assessment of Latinx immigrant childcare providers' needs. No current graduate student openings are available, but undergraduate research opportunities exist.
