Dr. David Schary is a Professor of Exercise Science at Winthrop University's College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences, where he also serves as Director of Mental Health and Performance for Winthrop Athletics. He holds a Ph.D. in Exercise and Sport Science from Oregon State University, an M.Ed. in Counseling and Development from Winthrop University, an M.P.H. from Oregon State University, and an M.S. from Smith College. His clinical roles include counseling student-athletes to enhance performance and well-being, supported by his status as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPCA) and pending Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) certification.
Research interests focus on sport psychology, athlete mental health, health promotion, and kinesiology pedagogy. His publications emphasize mental health interventions, athlete well-being during transitions, and technology-assisted well-being assessments, particularly in high-stress environments like competitive sports and firefighting.
Prior to academia, Dr. Schary coached high school and college rowing and rowed competitively at UC Davis. Current work integrates leadership training and mental health frameworks into athletic and emergency-service contexts.
