David R. Newhouse

David R. Newhouse is a Professor of Indigenous Studies and Chair of the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies at Trent University, Ontario. He concurrently holds roles as Professor in the School of Business and Co-Chair of the Trent Aboriginal Education Council. His research focuses on modern Aboriginal society, governance, and economic development. Newhouse has held leadership positions including Principal of Peter Gzowski College and Chair of Trent’s Indigenous Studies department since 1993.

Education: B.Sc. and M.B.A. from the University of Western Ontario. Teaching emphasizes 'critical awareness' and 'reflective practice,' covering courses like Foundations of Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Governance.

Research spans Aboriginal modernity, urban Indigenous communities, and health policy. He co-leads national projects including the SSHRC Urban Aboriginal Research Network and a CIHR poverty-focused health study with Eabametoong First Nation. Awards include the 2016 Trent Award for Education Leadership and Innovation.

Grants and networks include SSHRC and CIHR-funded initiatives. He serves on numerous advisory boards, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Aboriginal Health Committee and the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board.
