David R. Cummiskey

David R. Cummiskey is a Professor of Philosophy at Bates College. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Washington College. His courses include biomedical ethics, philosophy of law, moral theory, contemporary liberalism, and Buddhist philosophy.

His research integrates Kantian and consequentialist approaches with intercultural ethics, focusing on Buddhist-Kantian dialogues, political philosophy, and bioethics. Recent work examines self-constitution, free will, and ethical constructivism in Buddhist and Western traditions.

Publications demonstrate consistent engagement with ethical theory, cross-cultural bioethics, and political justice. Key themes include dignity, rights, and the application of philosophical frameworks to global challenges.
