David Paternotte is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the Université libre de Bruxelles, where he serves as codirector of STRIGES and chairs the board of the interdisciplinary master's program in gender studies across six French-speaking Belgian universities. His research focuses on same-sex marriage advocacy, LGBT activism, anti-gender campaigns, and academic freedom in Europe.
He has authored the book Revendiquer le "mariage gay": Belgique, France, Espagne (2011) and co-edited notable volumes including The Lesbian and Gay Movement and the State (2011), LGBT Activism and the Making of Europe (2014), and Anti-Gender Campaigns in Europe (2017). His work explores the intersection of social movements, policy, and European integration.
As co-director of the book series "Global Queer Politics" (Palgrave) and "Genre(s) & Sexualité(s)" (Editions de l'Université de Bruxelles), he contributes significantly to interdisciplinary gender and sexuality studies. His current research investigates threats to academic freedom and anti-gender mobilizations across Europe.
He plays a central role in coordinating STRIGES and fostering collaboration among Belgian French-speaking universities through the master's program in gender studies.
