David P. Gushee is an Endowed Professor of Christian Social Ethics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He holds leadership roles as Chair in Christian Social Ethics and Chair of the PhD Proposal Advisory Committee. His academic journey includes teaching at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Union University, and Mercer University before joining VU in 2021. Gushee earned his Ph.D. in Christian Ethics from Union Theological Seminary in 1993.
Research interests focus on Christian social ethics, post-evangelicalism, democracy and Christianity, and LGBTQ+ inclusion. His notable works include Kingdom Ethics (2003), Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies (2023), and the upcoming The Moral Teachings of Jesus (2024). He has authored or edited 29 books and over 110 scholarly outputs.
Key awards include serving as President of the American Academy of Religion (2018) and the Society of Christian Ethics (2018). Currently supervising 7 PhD students, Gushee is a sought-after commentator on global faith-politics intersections.
