David Nicholas is currently serving as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, where he also holds the position of Professor. He is a Full Member of both the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education. Additionally, he serves as a Child Health & Wellness Researcher at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, Owerko Centre.

Professor Nicholas's research program focuses on neurodevelopmental disabilities and chronic health issues in childhood and adolescence. His work examines quality of life of children and family members, incorporates the social determinants of health, and investigates transition and access to services. He actively participates in the University of Calgary's Child Health and Wellness strategic initiative (2020-2025).

His research program has secured funding for multiple projects focused on improving healthcare experiences and outcomes for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families.
