Irell and Manella Graduate School of Biological SciencesAbout
David Nemazee, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). His research focuses on self/non-self discrimination in B lymphocytes, immune tolerance mechanisms, and vaccine development against pathogens like HIV and influenza. He holds a B.A. in Biochemistry from Harvard College (1979) and a Ph.D. in Cellular and Developmental Biology from Harvard University (1983). His work has pioneered the use of transgenic models to study B cell tolerance and receptor editing.
- Education: B.A. Harvard College (1979), Ph.D. Harvard University (1983)
- Professional Experience: Scientific Member at Basel Institute for Immunology (1983-1989), TSRI faculty since 1989
Research interests span B cell tolerance induction, innate immune responses, and engineering antibodies for vaccine design. Notable contributions include defining clonal deletion and receptor editing mechanisms, and developing mouse models to study broadly neutralizing HIV antibodies. His lab also investigates PLD3/PLD4 enzymes in dendritic cells and their role in antiviral immunity.
Awards: 1993 NIH Merit Award, 2014 NIH Research Career Development Award.
Advising & Grants: Mentored students including My An-Adirekkun and Linghang Peng. Current lab members include senior scientists Amanda Gavin and Patrick Skog. Collaborations span vaccine development and innate immune signaling studies.
Labs/Teams: The Nemazee Lab at TSRI focuses on immunological tolerance, B cell biology, and translational vaccinology, with ongoing projects targeting SARS-CoV-2 and HIV.
