David Nelson

David Nelson is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Sunderland, where he has served since 1999. His research focuses on databases, Big Data, and NoSQL systems, alongside pedagogical innovations in database education. He leads multiple MSc programs including Computing, Data Science, and Cybersecurity, and oversees Master's projects across Computing and Engineering. His work includes collaborations with North East companies via Knowledge Transfer projects, rated outstanding. He currently supervises PhD students in database security and noisy web data learning, and chairs steering committees for key database education conferences.

Research interests span database security, data privacy, and high-performance computing. Awards include Chartered IT Professional status and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His publications emphasize database interoperability, query optimization, and bioinformatics applications of network analysis. He has pioneered virtual cluster development for teaching and authored influential works on database normalization in Big Data contexts.
